What to Expect
What to Expect
The Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden is a quiet, outdoor space. The Memorial Garden takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to walk through thoughtfully, though many visitors choose to sit longer at the curved granite benches surrounding the steel beam.
The bent steel beam at the center is the immediate focal point. Take a moment to simply stand with it before reading the surrounding plaques. The names engraved on the stainless steel base, all 2,977 of them, are worth taking time with. Walk slowly around the full perimeter before sitting. The Steel Beam & Symbolism page offers a full guide to the meaning behind what you see.
Evening visits offer a different experience. The Memorial Garden is lit at night and the atmosphere after dark is quieter and more contemplative. The lighting was designed intentionally for remembrance. The designers believed remembrance should not be limited to daylight.
Children & Photography
Visiting with Children
The Memorial Garden is welcoming to visitors of all ages. Children often respond most strongly to the physical presence of the steel beam — its scale and the fact that it is bent makes an impression that words alone cannot. There are no graphic images at the memorial. It was designed to honor and remember, not to depict violence or cause distress.
The Memorial Garden Guided Exploration, available on the Community page and as a printable PDF, is designed to guide children through the Memorial Garden in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
Photography
Photography is welcome at the memorial. Visitors are asked to be respectful of the space and of others who may be grieving or reflecting. During the annual September 11 ceremony, photography is permitted but visitors are asked to be mindful of the ceremony in progress.
